Minutes of the 3rd quarter general meeting of iee Nigeria Younger Members Section, held at Nana’s restaurant and resort, Minna Niger state on 19th june, 2004
  The meeting which started at about 12noon had members of the IEE Nigeria YMS from across the various geographical zones in attendance. Opening prayer was said by Abdulwaheed Musa, after which the anchoring was taken over by Gbenga Adeyemo.
   Without any further delay, Gbenga apologized to the members for the delay in the commencement of the meeting, initially scheduled to take place at the Federal University of Technology, Minna Niger State, attributed to logistics problems.
   He also mentioned that the 1st quarter meeting was held in the west (Lagos), 2nd quarter in the East (Enugu) while the 3rd billed for the North (Niger State) held as planned.
      Members present, in turns introduced themselves. The technical session started with the main lecture of the day delivered by Mr. Sam Ade Jacob on “Connecting Devices Using Embedded Computing and Jini” which got the maximum concentration of the audience for about 40minutes. Shortly after was the Question and Answer session which revealed member's dire need to find out about becoming a member of the Jini community, information on interaction between Jini and Microsoft products, how to obtain the software, cost implications to mention but a few. The speaker did justice to the questions and even promised to make more materials available as soon as they are compiled.
    On ground to commence the 2nd session, Administrative Section, was Femi Badejo who gave a brief secretariat report of the activities of the YMS since the start of the current session. He talked about the formalization of the Nigeria YMS and the various benefits attached which include International recognition, assured source of funding from the parent body, improved relationship between members within and outside the country, faster membership process and access to web update on IEE’s registered domain, which the Nigeria branch of the YM has been enjoying.

   Also mentioned were the inauguration ceremonies held for new chapters in schools. These include Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti, University of Ado Ekiti, Federal University of Technology, MINNA (which in a very short while, proved to be capable of hosting the 3rd quarter general meeting of Nigeria YMS), while having University of Maiduguri in immediate view. University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University and Federal University of Technology Owerri to join the league very soon.
   The need for registering a chapter with the host school authority was clearly defined which he noted was one of the major reasons for the change in the venue from the University campus to an accessible alternative within the school vicinity. He also pointed out that when an organization such as IEE is duly registered with the school authority, access will be granted to make use of school facilities such as school hall, and convergence of students for an event will not be taken as a threat to security on campus.  Materials needed for the registration process include a copies of the constitution, application for registration address to the Dean of student affairs, a recommendation letter from the Patron/Matron or Staff Adviser, and a list of committee members. These requirements might vary according to various institution.
   Other membership values, access to IEE library, publications, online discussion forum and mailing list, newly improved system of subscription payments were also mentioned and thoroughly expatiated.
   The moderator explained more on what it takes to join the IEE, and how to go about becoming a member. In a nutshell, all that is required is to obtain a copy of the Student Membership Application Form from the local chapter of the institution the intending member belongs, which can also be downloaded on the IEE website – www.iee.org or obtained from the File section of the mailing list of the Nigeria YMS hosted by YahooGroups! Fill completely and return to any branch of the Afribank Nigeria Plc, quoting Your Full Name (and not the name of the person helping you make the payment), the new account number, 0781195626617 and lastly the amount paid. A copy of the payment teller should be kept for record purpose while another copy attached to the application form (for new application) or subscription notice (for renewal) is enveloped and addressed to The Branch Manager, Afribank Nig. Plc, Keffi Street, Ikoyi, Lagos.
   The final session, a discussion forum, was anchored by Femi Badejo which was aimed at getting the views of members from diverse locations on ways to improve the services of the IEE to the younger members resident in Nigeria.
   Views were aired and a few include non-support from school authority, ineffectiveness of local chapters in disseminating information, delayed response from IEE Uk on new applications, quest for technical activities on campus such as industrial visits, seminar, symposia etc. Leke Akande, the chairman of the host institution noted that the security state of campus usually serves as a deterrent, as members seem unsure about the legal implications of such gathering. The anchor advised members making points to work hand in hand with the committee members of affected chapters on making up where there are lapses and also noted that where possible; programmes of the IEE can be held in collaboration with the concerned departmental association.
   As regards funding of the local chapters, suggestions were proffered by the house on how money can be raised by member through seeking for sponsorship and sales of memorabilia to members of the academic community. It was also suggested that members should support with donations since IEE is registered as a charity. Abdulwaheed suggested the need for proper orientation of members before personal contribution can be possible
   It was also noted that membership of IEE has lately been restricted to Electronic/Electrical/Computer Engineering whereas students of Computer Science and Physics should also be entitled to membership. On this note, Femi Badejo advised that such persons should join the professional bodies that deals directly with their field of study. E,g IMechE, IChemE, ASME etc. while he also promised to enquire from IEE Uk, the possibility of membership by students not studying IEE related course.
   Lunch break was observed where member were treated to a sumptuous meal.
Seyi Olufade, after the break, gave a re-cap of all that were discussed during the meeting, adding that members should cultivate the habit of carrying out their various activities professionally, assists one another by formation of technical and tutorial classes while proceeding can be made available for a token which will end up being instrumental to the funding of other activities of the chapter. Tolu Adekoya, coordinator of the upcoming August grand event of IEE Nigeria YMS tagged "SEEGAN 2004" Students, Enthusiasts and Experts Global Area Networking, gave a briefing on the need for such an event in time and age. He mentioned plans on getting an international speaker and urged all members to give maximum support to ensure the success of the event and regularly visit the Nigeria YMS website (www.ieenyms.8m.net) for further information which will be uploaded as they become available.
   Tayo Akinsuroju, representing University of Maiduguri, used the opportunity to inform the house about the coming inauguration of University of Maiduguri chapter. Details and schedule of the event which will be communicated in due time. Considering the extreme distance of the location, members planning to attend are advised to make adequate preparation.
   It was at this point that the Chairman made a grand entry to the venue of the meeting after a long day sorting out other pressing issues in other states of the Northern region of the country.
   
He appreciated every member that deemed to fit to be present and also mentioned the efforts of the Central Committee Members in ensuring the success of the meeting despite all odds. He implored all members of the noble institution to always make themselves available as much as possible and be involved in all activities geared towards the professionalism.
   The Chairman gave the closing remark; Gbenga Adeyemo said the closing prayer at about 3.05pm. Members converged for photographs and exchanged pleasantries.
